The Aboriginal Health Service provides comprehensive primary care to the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community and is seeking a Nurse (RN or EN) to join its multidisciplinary team at the Devonport and Burnie practices. Please Note: This position is not offering sponsorship.

The Position

Nurses are integral to the exceptional care provided at the Aboriginal Health Service. This role offers a unique opportunity for a Nurse to take on a direct clinical position, supporting the GP in delivering high-quality care focused on preventative measures, chronic disease management, and family support.

In Burnie, the new Nurse will collaborate closely with an experienced RN and Aboriginal Health Worker in both clinical and care coordination roles. The Devonport practice operates as a branch of Burnie, with a GP visiting twice a week. In this position, you will be the lead nurse at the Devonport site, while still receiving valuable support from the Burnie team as needed.

In this role, you will play a vital role in the clinic’s processes, ensuring a safe and efficient practice in Burnie as part of the larger team, while taking charge of managing these processes in Devonport. An extensive statewide team is ready to provide support whenever required.

Candidates Will Need…

  • Strong communication skills, including active listening, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to convey information clearly and empathetically
  • Understanding and respecting Aboriginal culture, values, and practices to provide culturally safe care.
  • Good collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including other healthcare professionals and Aboriginal Health Workers.
  • Precision in documentation, medication administration, and following clinical guidelines to ensure patient safety.
  • Effective prioritisation of tasks in a busy clinical environment to ensure timely patient care.

The Organisation

The Aboriginal Health Service is a Community Controlled Health Organisation operated by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre. It offers primary health services across major Tasmanian population centres. Care is team-based, with Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Child Health Nurses, Physiotherapists, Dietitians, Counsellors, and a variety of specialists working onsite to provide care for Aboriginal patients and their families.

This position will work alongside an experienced Aboriginal Health Worker, RN, and GP team to provide clinical care for the Northwest Community, supporting clinics at both sites.
